Take care of your mental health this World Mental Health Day

Local health teams across South Cheshire and Vale Royal are encouraging us all to take steps to look after our mental wellbeing for World Mental Health Day on October 10.

One in four adults and one in ten children will have some sort of mental health issue in their lives, but sometimes don’t know what help they need, how to get it or feel embarrassed talking about their problems.

The state of your mental health can be affected by factors such as changes in our lives, health worries, work related stress and grief among other things. Alcohol and drugs can also have a negative effect.

In some circumstances people will experience a mental health crisis. This often means that you no longer feel able to cope or in control of your situation.

Melanie Brown, Clinical Project Manager – Mental Health Commissioning at NHS South Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS Vale Royal CCG said: “It’s really important that we treat our mental health as we would our physical health.

“Speak to someone about how you are feeling, that can be anyone, friend, family or colleague.”

“Just because we can’t visibly see the symptoms, we shouldn’t ignore them.

People across South Cheshire and Vale Royal have access to a number of services to help with mental health.

Mental Health Self Help Guides

A range of online self-help guides and smartphone app have been developed so you will have the latest mental health advice at your fingertips.

These self-help guides come in the form of leaflets, audio clips and videos which have been produced by health professionals to offer support on a range of topics including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, panic and stress.

You in Mind

Youinmind.org is a virtual ‘one-stop-shop’ putting mental health advice online when you need it.

The platform includes a dedicated search option, so you can get quick information on a range of mental health conditions such as depression, stress, eating disorders and bereavement.

Detailed information booklets are also available to view and download explaining about a condition with help on how to manage it and ideas people can try.

Children and Young People’s Out of Hours Advice Line

The Children and Young People’s Out of Hours Advice Line lets you speak to a specially trained clinician who you can talk to about how you're feeling. The phone line - 01244 397 644 - is open from 5-10pm Monday to Friday and noon-8pm Saturday and Sunday.

The Wellbeing Hub

The Wellbeing Hub helps to identify any mental health issues at the earliest possible opportunity so that you can access the most appropriate support.

The team includes experienced mental health nurses, psychological therapists and psychiatrists, who provide treatment and support following assessment and can refer people to other services if necessary.

A call to the team can result in:

  • Assessment - helping you to understand how you are feeling
  • Signposting - so that you know about other services, information resources and support groups
  • Talking Therapies - psychological therapies to help you to manage your emotions and feelings
  • Treatment - We will meet with you at a number of sessions to review your progress over time
