New COVID-19 vaccination centre at Ellesmere Port Civic Hall
As the Chester Racecourse COVID-19 Vaccination Centre relocated to Ellesmere Port, it was confirmed that 100,000 people received at least one dose of vaccine at the Racecourse site.
The milestone coincided with the opening of a new regional vaccination centre at Ellesmere Port Civic Hall, near Cheshire Oaks, on Monday, June 21st.
The move was all part of planned changes to Cheshire’s COVID-19 Vaccination Programme that now also consists of five GP-led and 11 pharmacy-led services across the county, a further regional vaccination centre at Alderley Park and a continued roll-out of pop-up vaccination clinics.
Each of the vaccination services are designed to help make it more convenient for people to get vaccinated closer to where they live.
Vaccination remains our strongest weapon in the battle against COVID-19 so please come forward if you are eligible and ensure you get both doses. So far, more than 40 million people across the country have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, including more than 1 million people in Cheshire and Merseyside.
Sheena Cumiskey, CEO for Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, who have led operations at the Racecourse, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to deliver 100,000 vaccines to our community and I would like to thank all of the staff and volunteers that have made this a reality.
“At CWP we are extremely proud to be involved in the vaccination programme in Cheshire, and we would like to thank Chester Racecourse for accommodating the vaccination centre over the last few months, their help and support has been truly invaluable to help protect the communities we serve.
“To date the centre has utilised a network of over 800 volunteers who have filled over 8,000 shifts – including staff from the NHS, Cheshire and Merseyside Fire Service, St Johns Ambulance and Chester Racecourse.
“We look forward to being able to continue to offer this to our wider population, in line with the JCVI guidance.”
Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, Councillor Louise Gittins, said: “We’re looking forward to the next steps of the vaccination programme in Cheshire and I would like to encourage everyone to get their vaccine when they become eligible.
“A huge thanks to Chester Racecourse and to everyone involved in the vaccination programme there. They have done a phenomenal job and I’m certain that that will continue at the Civic Hall.”
